Abstract The "Lost Crew" was under the supervision of Ranger Ralph Debbitt. Ranger Debbitt was not with the crew at the time of the blowup; he was tending to duties in Avery about six miles away. The "Lost Crew" consisted of 28 men who refused the evacuation order of Charles Sullivan, Shoshone County Deputy Sheriff out of Avery; all 28 died. Sullivan was sent to bring out the crew of about 70 firefighters working on Setzer Creek by Ranger Ralph Debbitt who foresaw the danger of the rapidly approaching fire storm.
