Abstract Ranger James Danielson and his crew of 18 were fighting fire on Stevens Peak, the highest point in northern Shoshone County on the Idaho - Montana border. They found themselves surrounded by fire. Danielson took them to an area of bear grass which they burned off. They took refuge there in hopes it would not reburn when the fire storm hit. Once the fire storm hit they covered themselves with blankets, their only protection. One man, Walter Beaman, died when he inhaled fire gases. All of the others survived but with extensive burn injuries. They suffered from their burns, arms raised above their heads becasuse it was too painful to have any part of them touching them as they walked single file into Mullan.
