| For nearly a week after the great fire, it was believed that Ranger Joe Halm had perished with his crew of 16 men. They were fighting the Bean Creek fire in the upper St. Joe drainage. The crew took refuge on a sand bar at the confluence of Bean Creek and the St. Joe River when the fire storm hit. It took them almost a week to trek 65 miles out over the Bitterroot divide.
