| Description |
Can, Food-storage - "Hole-in-cap" cans were an early form of container that allowed condensed milk, fruit or other similar food items to be placed inside the container through a hole that was covered with a cap with a small vent hole in it. The contents were then heated and sanitized and a final drop of solder was added to the vent hole to seal the can like item L2009.09.04. This particular hole-in-cap can was punctured with an ice pick suggesting it held milk or juice. This type of hole-in-top can was the earliest type of "milk" can that was first used in the 1860s and eventually replaced by "match-stick-filler-vent" cans by the late 1880s.Can, Food-storage - "Hole-in-cap" cans were an early form of container that allowed condensed milk, fruit or other similar food items to be placed inside the container through a hole that was covered with a cap with a small vent hole in it.
