| Abstract |
People had been congregating at the train depots for some time before the fire started in Wallace. Though the yard masters had put together evacuation trains, none had left due to the lack of track orders to do so; they didn't want to run headlong into an on coming train. Once the fire started, caution was thrown to the wind and the trains were loaded with women and children only by order of the Mayor. Mayor Hanson directed the Buffalo Soldiers to enforce his edict.
